Powell acted in the action film The Expendables 3 (2014), the comedy-horror anthology series Scream Queens (2015–2016), the teen comedy Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), the historical romance The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018), and the romantic comedy Set It Up (2018). He also portrayed astronaut John Glenn in Hidden Figures (2016) and aviator Tom Hudner in Devotion (2022). His performance in the former earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. Further, Powell starred in Edgar Wright's The Running Man (2025), based on the 1987 Stephen King novella of the same name; How to Make a Killing (2026), a remake of the 1949 film Kind Hearts and Coronets; and had his first major voice performance in a feature film as Fox McCloud (aka Star Fox) in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026), a role he personally sought Nintendo for.
