After studying at the University of the Orange Free State and teaching for two years, he joined the SABC, where he made the Afrikaans phone-prank radio series Vrypostige Mikrofoon with Fanus Rautenbach. His candid-camera feature You Must Be Joking! (1986) began a long run of hidden-camera and slapstick comedies, including Oh Schucks...! Here Comes U.N.T.A.G., There's a Zulu on My Stoep and Mr Bones (2001), his most successful film. He also recorded a string of best-selling Afrikaans and rugby albums.
