After earning his degree from Tokyo's Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering in 1970, he joined Honda's research department, focusing initially on exhaust emissions. In the mid-1980s, as Honda intensified its involvement in Formula 1, Goto transitioned to the racing division. He played a pivotal role in developing Honda's turbocharged engines, which powered teams like Williams and McLaren to multiple Constructors' and Drivers' Championships. In 1997, he became head of the engine department at Sauber Petronas Engineering AG. After his tenure in Formula 1, Goto founded Geo Technology in 2006, an engineering consultancy specializing in high-performance powertrains for the automotive and motorcycle industries.
